Not for the Faint of heart

Here's that pretty silk chiffon dress again, as promised. This time I gave it a more relaxed look by leaving the ties loosely hanging rather than tying them up in a bow. Since the dress is sheer and needs something underneath, I chose my burgundy suede shorts; they brought in a little color and were an unexpected twist.

My initial thought was to grab one of my pairs of tall, chunky boots, such as my Jeffrey Campbell Clinics or X-Rays. But in the end I decided that they would've been a rather obvious choice to pair with shorts, so I opted for these well-worn cowboy boots instead. The giant wedge boots are so ubiquitous these days that I feel the need to deploy them sparingly, and then only when it's least expected.

This outfit also features the new bag that I brought home from Century 21 in New York; the store is home to some amazing deals on designer goods but is not for the faint of heart. Getting trampled in the mad frenzy, or at the very least jostled and shoved,  is a very real possibility. I narrowly escaped with my life! -- and this infinitely versatile bag. I've decided that soft gray is the perfect shade for a bag; it can go with browns, it can go with black, it can go with color. And I might have been exaggerating just a little when I implied that I risked my life to buy it.

Katie Holmes Explains Xrated Gummies Incident

When Suri Cruise was photographed holding a box of adult candy at New York restaurant Serendipity 3 recently, it created a lot of questions and publicity. Katie Holmes sets the record straight and explains the incident on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, to be aired this Friday.

“Recently, I took her to get ice cream in New York at this place called Serendipity that we go to all the time,” says Holmes. “It’s for kids. The clientele is children.”

She continues, “We go in and we are waiting for a table and she grabs some gummies that are boy part gummies. I was horrified.”

When asked by DeGeneres what she meant by “boy part" Holmes replies, "P-e-n-i-s gummies. I said, oh wow, those aren’t Swedish fish.”

By then, it was too late. The paparazzi already were snapping photos of Suri holding the box.

Holmes says, “I was like, why are they selling these here? This is for kids. And then it was on the cover of a magazine that I’m giving her those gummies. Yes, they were taking photos of it. I was like, oh my God, no. We put them back.”

Pièce de Résistance

The image that sparked the creation of this outfit is this one from the Prabal Gurung collection, which was part of my Fashion Week roundup post last week. And yes, I realize the two outfits really look nothing alike, but the kernel of the idea was simply to wear my furry vest over my long cream cardigan, not necessarily to recreate the whole outfit (though I still want to try that too). After that I just got carried away, grabbing as many white, cream, and beige items as I could find and throwing them all together.

The pièce de résistance was this cream harness that I snagged out of Mark's workshop; I thought it integrated really well with the other pieces and gave some geometry and structure to the outfit. I showed it here without the vest just so you could get a better look at it, but I did wear the vest all day at work so that the harness just barely peeked out.

Here's The Next Thing I'll Agonize Over Until I Inevitably Break Down And Buy It

($129, Irregular Choice, Modcloth.com)
UPDATE: One of you commented and asked what I'd wear these with. Good question, lady. It's a hard one. I'd probably keep it pretty tame since the shoes be cray-cray. Maybe a denim skirt and white button-down top? Denim shirt and black leggings? I've been dressing a LITTLE more simply lately -- basics, jeans or a skirt, and some kinda wackadoo shoes or accessories. Also, check out how ModCloth's adorable owner (and pug enthusiast!) Susan Gregg Koger styled the look.

I should just go ahead and devote approximately 48 minutes of my Tuesday to allow the practical side of me to try to convince the part of me that lacks self-control to have a two-way conversation about why I shouldn't buy these Irregular Choice heels. Ultimately, practical me will be held hostage by my lack of self-control, who will commandeer my credit card, hit "buy," and set free within me a strange brew of chemicals and emotions, ranging from oxytocin to shame and regret... Which is all just a long-winded, round-about way of admitting that I'll probably buy these. I love a crystal heel, and I LOVE Irregular Choice. They're like Jeffrey Campbell on MDMA.

Impatient

This fun, patterned dress is from my adventure at Desigual with Sal. We both tried on a lot of the same items that day, but if I remember correctly this is the only one we both bought. All that bright color and the fact that it's sleeveless really makes this more of a summer dress, but I got impatient to wear it and layered it up for a cool weather outfit. Not wanting to completely obliterate the summery vibe, I added a pink tank top to fill in the neckline and add some brighter color near my face.

See-Through Stylestalker Skater Dress? Sure. Why Not?

($233, Stylestalker, Asos.com)
Dear Mom,

Camp is great. You were right! I ended up making friends. I'll be ready to come home once summer's over I think though.

I have to tell you something though. I decided to start wearing see-through dresses (with a bra, of course). I won't wear it to Hebrew school, but everywhere else is fair game.

Love,

Your Daughter

PS: Send shaving cream and shoelaces.

Mixing Grays

Lately I find myself drawn to mixed-neutral color schemes, especially when the weather turns rainy and cold as it has been here for the past couple of weeks. So this crochet-trimmed cardigan and black knit dress were quite timely presents from my family; the cardigan is from my mom, and the dress is from my aunt. They always seem to do a great job picking out clothes for me.

Throwing in some gray is always a great way to blend brown and black together, so I added several items in varying shades of silver-gray. Grays can be tricky to mix, so it's important to pay close attention to whether items are a warm or cool gray; the easiest combinations will always be like with like. In past outfits I've mixed different bluish-grays (here's one example, and here's another), and in others I've gone with warmer grays with brown undertones (such as this outfit). Warm and cool grays can be mixed, as long as there's an intervening color that bridges the gap; in this outfit I mixed a soft taupe-gray with a deep charcoal, using plenty of brown to ease the transition.

For more on mixing neutrals, click here to read what Sal has to say about it.

Ruh-Roh. Hello Kitty Doc Martens Exist

Sanrio and Dr. Martens are BOTH turning 50, and they're celebrating the only way they know how -- covering an entire shoe in little Hello Kittys.

While I'm about three decades too old to justify wearing these, I do appreciate that not only Hello Kitty but her less popular friends Chococat, Keroppi, Little Twin Stars and My Melody all make appearances on the shoes too.

The Hello Kitty Docs are available April 2011. Proceed with caution, adults.

Reason To Start Buying Scratch-Off Tickets: This Alica + Olivia Tan Leather Tulip Skirt

Is it sad that I don't think it's sad to consider selling one's own plasma for this Alice + Olivia tan leather tulip skirt? Should I not have admitted to that thought?

Charmed By Venessa Arizaga

Today I shot more footage for Stephanie Caruso's short film, "Fashion. It's Fucking Fantastic," about fashion bloggers -- watch the trailer here. It's J'DORABLE, and I'm honored to be in it. For real.

Anyway, I borrowed a necklace from one of my favorite jewelry designers, Venessa Arizaga, who creates charming (hee) necklaces and bracelets and types of handmade pieces that become insta-favorites (like, horse necklace status). She was a designer for Tuleh and Carolina Herrera and, most recently, design director for Zac Posen (NBD!) and left last year to pursue jewelry full-time and run her surf shop, the Rock Co-Op, in Rockaway Beach.

Many of her pieces are inspired by travels, the beach, and beachy travels, which is why each piece feels like a little souvenir celebration.

I wore the Gold Mine necklace...
($395, Venessa Arizaga)

I also love this charm necklace, but I knew my Jewish mom would lose her shiz if she saw me wearing a necklace with a cross on it. And I just can't do that to my moms, you know?
($150, Venessa Arizaga)
Q: What's cuter than this pearl and skull necklace? A: Not much.

Demonstrating my need for a real digital camera.

Get Venessa Arizaga's charming charm necklaces at Opening Ceremony and here.
